We've caught over £6m of tenancy fraud from January to July in 2022. There is no hiding from this growing threat for letting agents anymore.
It’s no secret that 2022 has, and will continue to, cost people in the UK much more money for basic necessities than it has for many years. Energy insight analysts predicted that energy bills could reach £4,266 in January 2023. Inflation is currently at 10.1% - the highest since 1982.
London rent prices saw the largest price increase in 20 years at the beginning of this year. In June 2022, real wages fell at the fastsest rate for 20 years.
All of this takes its toll. As so often is the case with financial fraud, it becomes more prevelant during times of hardship - we’ve seen a sharp increase in attempts at tenancy fraud since the start of 2022. Our last report was in January.
But we thought it was vitally important all letting agents were vigilant to the fact that the rise in fraud is stark and therefore so is the financial risk.
